Harry Carter, 71, operator of several service stations here, a Jasper  township farmer and oil field pumper, died at 4:35 Monday afternoon in the Clay County Hospital in Flora.  Mr. Carter had been suffering with a malignancy since the first of the year and had been in and out of Hospitals, undergoing treatments.   He lived north of Fairfield.

Services were conducted at 2 p.m. Thursday (today) at Dixon & Johnson Funeral Home in Fairfield, with Rev. Raymond Watson officiating. Burial was in Maple Hill Cemetery.

Mr. Carter was born in Coles County Aug. 14, 1904, the son of Isaac and  Margaret (Swendle) Carter. He was married to Bessie Holley.  He and his family moved to Wayne County during the oil boom. He has worked in the oil field business off and on over the years, working as a rough neck and pumper for N. V. Duncan and for Alva Davis later.

Mr. Carter operated several service stations in Fairfield, including the East End Shell across from Brown Chevrolet and the old Wides station. He also operated the Fairfield Feed Store at one time.  In addition to that, he farmed in Jasper County some, his family said.

Surviving are his widow, Bessie; three sons, Jimmy, of Fairfield, Lawrence,  of Geff, and Waren, of Murfreesboro, Tenn.; three daughters, Mrs. Frank Mayo, Mrs. Charles Ralston and Mrs. Ruben Cabrera, all of Tempe, Ariz.; 14 grandchildren and two great-grandchildren; two brothers, Harvey, of Granby,  Mo., and Roy, of Newark, Calif.; two sisters, Julia Butler, of Matoon; and  Goldie Carter, of Freemont, Calif.  One son, Donald, died in 1950.
